Languages
Languages throughout the realm.
Arcane -
The language of magic. It passes on arcane secrets through code, symbolism and an alphabet all it's own. When spoken alloud it seems to echo and reverberate throughout the area. You feel the energy in the air move in the same waves as the sound.
Common -
Native language for Humans. Known to the civilized races since humans are the most populous race in the relm.
Infernal (Demonic/Devilish) -
The language of the fallen gods. The demons and devils created their own langauge and pass it amongst their followers. Spoken it has many similarities to arcane, which leaves those who do not cast magic to question if a difference exists at all. It is a symbolic language, and has no known alphabet. It also has very few symbols and words. Inflection and body language created subtle differences in the meaning of each word. Because of this most demons/devils have all contracts spoken/written in Infernal to give them the greatest chance to twist their way out of it.
Draconic -
The language of dragons. They never share this knowledge with outsiders, and it seems to be inherited biologically rather than taught to offspring. Some humans captured and watched dragon hatchlings to learn bits of the draconic, but no non dragon has a full understanding of the language.
Because of the secrecy of the language there is no known written version of Draconic.
Druidic -
Native language of the elves and taught to those who follow the path of the druid. Because of it's current status under the eyes of the gods, druidic is not taught to outsiders of the faith or race.
With written druidic letters are known as trees, sentences as groves and written works as forests. There is no punctuation within druidic writing. Sentencase are signified by 'ground' a solid line connecting the bottom of all the letters. Gaps signify spaces between words.
Fae -
There is no written language to the fae, and human voices are simply unable to make the pitch and multiple noises needed to speak fae. But they are able to learn it so that they may understand the language of pixies, nymphs and dryads.
Gnomish -
Gnomish seems unreadable to those who aren't very familiar with the language. There is no obvious punctuation. Nor is there any obvious formatting. Subtle differences in lettering (size, tilt, etc) allow written gnomish to not only send ideas, but the intended emotions as well. Sarcasm, anger, sadness, humor is not lost through the act of writing.
Spoken Gnomish is made of lots of words. Gnomes have words differneciating the most subtle differences between ideas. A blue hammer and a red hammer each have their own word. And the word for a large blue hammer is different from that of a small blue hammer. The result is Gnomes are rarely mis understood by other gnomes, but their language is nearly impossible to learn.
Ghobel -
Native language of Goblins and Hobgoblins. As some of the more common dark races many other races (like trolls, ogres, etc) tend to pick a little of it up. If for no other reason then when using goblins as slaves they need to give orders. It's a sharp, snapping langauge with an underlying hiss to each of the words. The hiss is hard for humans to master, but it can be done.
Runic -
Native language to the Dwarves. Again, rarely taught to outsiders. It is a symbol based language, though there is an alphabet component used by outsiders or for ideas not worthy of their own 'mark'. Giving somethign a mark is to have forged it into history. It is a high honor for the king to decree an item or idea be cast. Dwarven families who've earned such honor in the eyes of the dwarven king can have a symbol created for their family name. Runecast families are the nobel and elite amongst the dwarves.
Shire (archaic)-
The native language of the halflings is disapearing as their trade and lands mingle with the humans. The origianal written language of the halflings is a flowing script alphabet. The words seemed gruff with hard consinent ends and lots of 'gh' and 'ch' mixes.
Shire -
The current languages of the halflings has become blended with common. Anyone who knows common could probably get the jist of someone speaking in Shire. The written alphabet has changed so it looks more like a flowing common script.
Titan -
Spoken and written there is a seeming similarity to common. It is suggested by many historians that Titans actually taught humans language during the first age, before they turned against the civilized races.
