Magic

Arcane magic

This form of magic does not come from the gods, but from the casters will to shape the world.  A knowledge of the process of bending reality takes study, training, and practice.

See also:  the Ages of Magic.

All spells require a tool of the caster to focus the desired effect.

Wands (Low Magic) -

Wands are used to channel the spells away from the caster and at the target.  Equiping a wand follows all the same rules as equiping a weapons.

Totems -

Totems are used to summon the spirit of a creature.  They are always made from a piece of the creature who's spirit is being summoned.  Either a claw, feather, bit of bone, tooth, etc.  The totem must be 'earned' to have any power.

Charms -

Carved wood or stone charms are used for spells that are to affect the caster.  Simply holding them while casting the spell will cary their affect to the caster.  They are effectively a Non-animal Totem.

Ritual -

Mostly divination magic, but some others as well, require rituals with specific components.  These can take a while to cast.

Divine Magic

The gods often grant their faithful, or individuals who embody their personas, special powers.  Even though gods are granting these powers to individuals, it is only those who seek to pursue the divine that can travel far down this path.

A few gods will grant powers to an individual for a time, in hopes of swaying them one way or another, without even the individual's notice.  But eventually, the gods do demand service of their followers.

Divine Focus -

A symbol of their god that they channel the god's will through.  They are used for blessings and prayers.

Ritual -

Mostly divination magic, but some others as well, require rituals with specific components.  These can take a while to cast.

Earth Magic

The druids and rangers of the world call on the earth and her creatures for power.  In exchange they guard and care for the earth herself.  Elves were the original keepers of this knowledge, but their cities are lost to ruins, and their kind have gone out of time at the first tree.  Some of the oldest humans living in the rural areas still remember stories of the elves, and may have some lore.

The gods have a particular hate of earth magic, and most civilized societies have turned away from it.

Totems -

Totems are used to summon the spirit of a creature.  They are always made from a piece of the creature who's spirit is being summoned.  Either a claw, feather, bit of bone, tooth, etc.  The totem must be 'earned' to have any power.

Roots, leaves, branches and fruits -

Each has their own powers.  Druids use them to extend their power into nature directly.  Gathering such components requires a certain ceremony.  They are effectively Non-animal totems.

Ritual -

Mostly divination magic, but some others as well, require rituals with specific components.  These can take a while to cast.
